Various industry sources estimate that 30% or more of all gas/oil wells are leaking because of faulty cement/casing. Can this problem be predicted in future wells? Can it be remedied in existing wells? I will describe a recent detailed study of well integrity performance in the Pennsylvania Marcellus shale play. With over 100,000 wells expected in that play, how many can we expect to leak, and how many water wells might be contaminated?
